Netherlands-based broadcasting company Metropolis TV produces programs that reports on life and culture in different communities. One such program is this one that documented a group of cocoa farmers in the Ivory Coast tasting chocolate for the first time. Cocoa farmer N’Da Alphonse has been a cocoa farmer for much of his life, and yet he has never seen or tasted chocolate. “To be honest I do not know what they make of my beans,” says farmer N’Da Alphonse. “I’ve heard they’re used as flavoring in cooking, but I’ve never seen it. I do not even know if it’s true.” This clip from the full episode of chocolate on Metropolis TV shows his reaction, as well as the reactions of his fellow cocoa farmers when they first experience the sweet taste of chocolate. Their faces light up with incredible joy, reminding us that there is much to be grateful for in our modern communities–such as a simple bar of chocolate.
